Well my heart goes out to his family. Such a tragedy.
We have such beautiful parks and scenery around Wainuiomata, New Zealand and like most I have taken a lot of it for granted for many years. I only recently have started bush walking with my neighbour and we were in the vicinity of Jacek by what I think could have only been 1 or 2 kilometres. However as stated in an earlier post the bush was pretty overgrown on the tracks we were on up to the top of Mt. McKerrow. 1 or 2 kilometres can take a fair while to cover especially if you have gone off the tracks.
I would have to say the key things to remember are:
- always let someone know where you are going
- map out your route before hand
- make sure you are prepared for the trip
- go with someone.
I don’t mind if people use this post as a meet-up point to go on hikes around here.
I know I am usually keen though must admit I am glad not to be bush walking this weekend in the weather that has just hit now.

My friend Matts POV:
–<snip>–
Mount McKerrow.
Wainuiomata.
31st May 2008.
Halfway up the track leading from Hine road to the Whakanui track – McKerrow Track intersection I decided I was developing Slopigo (the opposite of Vertigo)…Puffing and panting, my legs were burning in all sorts of unusual and interesting new places and each time I looked up the steep track seemed to climb forever. I was starting to get scared to look up (rather than down).
The start of the McKerrow track is a little hard to spot. When you hit the sign with the dog leashes you are in the right place. The McKerrow track leads back into the bush, and is narrow, rather than the broader Whakanui track. We found it (accidentally)by looking back the way we had come and heading towards the sign advising that ‘kiwi like to walk this track too’. The McKerrow track has the same orange markers, but with a MW tag. Just before these signs is one of the few places with enough of a break in the trees to offer a view of Wainuiomata and Moores Valley.
The track is narrow, very muddy in places, slippery, and there are a number of fallen trees to clamber over/under. Care needs to be taken when negotiating these as it is easy to lose the track. Low grasses and bushes completely hide your footing in places and occasionally conceal unexpected holes.
There are few spots near the top of the mountain which offer a view
